Dawlish Warren History: While little is known of the early history of Dawlish Warren, it is thought that for many centuries it may just have been a breeding ground for rabbits (hence the "Warren" part of the name), these would of course have been used for food and for fur. In fact at his time the area was simply known as the Warren. During the middle part of the 17th century, at the time of the English Civil War, a Royalist fort was constructed at the tip of the sand spit, which at the time would have been wider (it has eroded from some 250 metres wide to just 50 metres wide over the last 250 years).

During the early 19th century there were saltworks on the dunes, though large areas of sand and salt pans were swept away by 2 great storms in 1817 and 1824.

The railway reached both Dawlish and Dawlish Warren in 1846, as Isambard Kingdom Brunel constructed his South Devon Railway, in the process, he had to cut through Langstone Point, creating what is now known as Langstone Rock.

The railway brought the first tourists to Dawlish Warren and of course to other towns along the coast, and in 1892 the first golf course was established on the sand spit, later in 1911, much of the golf course was separated from the rest of the spit by a violent storm.

Warren Halt station opened in 1905, and was replaced in 1912 by Dawlish Warren station, after which the area took its full name from that of the station, from then on being called "Dawlish Warren".

Over the last century or so, constant work has been done to hold back the erosion of the sand spit.
